  • The Foreign Secretary announces the opening of the Mexican embassy in Bangladesh, and takes part in the Raisina Dialogue, together with leading world figures

During his visit to India, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi the greetings of the people of Mexico and President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Both Prime Minister Modi and President López Obrador are frequently cited as the world leaders with the highest domestic approval ratings.

In India, the Foreign Secretary is participating in the Raisina Dialogue, a leading multilateral conference in Asia and the world. He took part in a panel discussion with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Josep Borrell; Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly; and State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Shahriar Alam, warning that an escalation of the war in Ukraine could have adverse effects on the security and economy of nations. “We have to work very hard to try to avoid the disaster that we see coming in the Russia-Ukraine situation,” he said.

Mexico opens an embassy in Bangladesh

While in New Delhi, Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard met with Foreign Minister Abdul Momen of Bangladesh and announced the opening of a Mexican embassy in Bangladesh for the second half of this year.

With a population of over 170 million, Bangladesh is a major player in the Central Asian region. Mexico is interested in boosting business and cooperation with Bangladesh, particularly in the pharmaceutical, agribusiness, and technology sectors.

Bangladesh already has an embassy in Mexico.
