There were violent skirmishes between supporters of two soccer clubs in central Mexico on Saturday. According to reports, 22 individuals were hurt, with two of them in severe condition.
After barely over an hour of play, the match was called off when supporters started fighting among themselves, causing alarm among the other spectators, according to press reports and footage from the scene.
Footage shared on social media shows guys dragging and punching and pulling people’s clothing off outside the stadium as they were dragged over the pavement. This was not the only video that showed a guy being physically abused.
Fights broke out between Querétaro and Atlas, the reigning champions of Liga MX, the Mexican soccer league. According to footage posted online, the violence quickly expanded to the pitch and the surrounding area of the stadium.
After the match, Liga MX issued a statement saying that it has initiated an in-depth inquiry into what transpired on and off the field.
