Roger Behling comes from Pomerode in Brazil. The 26 year-old has taken a
day out of his tour of Germany to visit Dresden, capital of the state of Saxony.
Coming from a German-speaking community in Brazil,Roger Behling has few language problems in Germany. So he is very interested to learn more about the culture and people here and has chosen to come to Dresden on his first visit to Germany.
Views from an internationally renowned monument
Roger Behling sets off through the old heart of Dresden to one of its most famous monuments, the Frauenkirche. Built in the 18th century,it was badly damaged during World War Two. For more than forty years it stood in ruins, before restoration work began in 1994. Now fully restored, visitors can seen the interior at fixed times and climb 67 meters to the viewing platform. This is where Roger Behling got his first view over the city.
Impressive artworks in precious materials
His next stop was the new Green Vault in the Royal Palace, one of Europe’s richest treasure houses. Roger Behling was amazed at the works of art in gold, silver, precious stones and other precious materials. More than a thousand exhibits are on view, dating from Renaissance to Classic times. Roger Behling was especially impressed by a cherry stone with 185 faces carved into it which he looked at through a magnifying glass.
Lifelike Baroque Dresden
Roger Behling ended his visit with a trip back in time. The Panometer, housed in an old gas holder, offers a 360 degree panorama of Dresden in 1756. Designed by Berlin artist Yadegar Asisi,it brings views of baroque sights such as the palace,Frauenkirche,Neumarkt and the landscape surrounding the river to life. The panoramic pictures, some 27 metres high and more than 100 metres long, are filled with people going about their daily business. Roger Behling is delighted with the way light effects and sounds of the baroque city change throughout the day.
At the end of his visit,Roger Behling said he liked Dresden very much and that he’d had a most enjoyable day.
